Bacteriostatic Water vs. Sterile Water
Two types of sterile diluent are commonly used to reconstitute peptides: bacteriostatic water, which contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol as a preservative, and plain sterile water for injection, which contains no preservative. Because bacteriostatic water's preservative inhibits bacterial growth across repeated draws from the same vial, it is the more common choice in research settings where a vial is accessed more than once, whereas plain sterile water is generally treated as single-use once opened.

General Handling Considerations
Common practice among researchers includes wiping the vial's rubber stopper with an alcohol swab before each use, directing the diluent along the inside wall of the vial rather than straight onto the lyophilized powder, and swirling the vial gently rather than shaking it. Vigorous agitation can cause excess foaming and is generally avoided, since it may affect the peptide's structure. The powder should be allowed to fully dissolve before the solution is used.

Once a peptide has been reconstituted, its stability profile changes — a reconstituted vial is generally more sensitive to degradation than the same peptide in its original lyophilized form, and is typically handled and stored differently as a result.
