Sermorelin is a synthetic fragment corresponding to the first 29 amino acids of native growth-hormone-releasing hormone — GHRH(1-29) — retaining the full receptor-binding bioactivity of the native hormone in a shorter, synthesizable form.

Its main limitation was always pharmacokinetic rather than pharmacological: sermorelin is cleared from circulation quickly, which is precisely why later analogs like CJC-1295 and Tesamorelin were engineered with additional stability modifications for a longer half-life. Sermorelin represents the foundational, unmodified GHRH signal that those later compounds were built to improve on.

What Sermorelin Has Been Studied For

Unlike most compounds referenced on this site, sermorelin has a completed pediatric approval history. The pivotal trials supporting its FDA approval as Geref (in prepubertal children with idiopathic GH deficiency) found daily subcutaneous sermorelin increased height velocity significantly, sustained through 36 months of continuous therapy. Geref was FDA-approved in 1990 and later discontinued from the market in 2008 for commercial, not safety, reasons.
