How KPV Was Discovered

KPV's research history begins with alpha-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone), a molecule long known for its role in skin pigmentation. Hiltz and Lipton's 1989 publication was the key demonstration of this, showing that KPV retained significant anti-inflammatory activity in vitro despite lacking the core sequence alpha-MSH needs to bind melanocortin receptors in the first place. That's the mechanistic detail that matters most for KPV's research use today: because it doesn't engage melanocortin receptors or raise intracellular cAMP the way alpha-MSH does, it can be studied for anti-inflammatory activity without the pigmentary or broader hormonal effects that come with the full-length hormone.
