How Epitalon Was Discovered
Epitalon's research lineage runs back to 1973, when Soviet researchers first described “Epithalamin” — a polypeptide extract from the pineal gland — in published research. The scientist most associated with developing this line of work is Vladimir Khavinson, whose research into extending functional longevity began in the late 1970s under the Soviet military, which was specifically interested in helping soldiers and cosmonauts withstand extreme physiological stress. Alongside collaborator Vladimir Anisimov, Khavinson's research eventually centered at what became the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology.
Epitalon itself — a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly — was synthesized to match the amino acid composition identified within Epithalamin, the original bovine pineal-gland extract. It was one part of a broader research concept Khavinson called “peptide bioregulation”: the idea that individual organs each produce their own short regulatory peptides, and that a synthetic version of an organ's natural peptide could be used to study, or in principle correct, age-related changes in that organ's function.
What Epitalon Has Been Studied For
Epitalon is now the most extensively studied of the Khavinson-lineage bioregulator peptides, and its research program has stayed close to its original focus on aging and pineal-gland biology. A substantial share of the published literature examines its relationship to telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining the protective caps (telomeres) on chromosomes, since telomere shortening is one of the most-studied mechanisms of cellular aging.
