How BPC-157 Was Discovered

BPC-157 traces back to 1975, when Predrag Sikiric — then a medical student at the University of Zagreb, Croatia — hypothesized that the stomach must produce a protective compound of its own to explain its remarkable ability to resist self-digestion and injury. Over the following years his research group investigated human gastric juice for exactly this kind of cytoprotective activity, and identified a protective protein they named “Body Protection Compound” (BPC).

From that protein, the team isolated a much smaller, 15-amino-acid fragment that appeared responsible for much of BPC's biological activity. That fragment — a synthetic pentadecapeptide, since this exact sequence has never been found circulating freely on its own in the body — became BPC-157. The group published its landmark paper in 1991 and formally characterized the compound in 1993, the same year Sikiric signed a research contract with the Croatian pharmaceutical company PLIVA, which went on to study the peptide alongside the American pharmaceutical company Parke-Davis.

What BPC-157 Has Been Studied For

BPC-157 has since become one of the most extensively referenced compounds in gastrointestinal- and musculoskeletal-repair research literature. Because the original research question concerned the stomach's own self-protective mechanisms, gut-repair models remain a core focus, but the compound's research footprint has grown well beyond that starting point.
